Brands As Media - AdAge Media Evolved 2010

This is an interesting guide for brands looking to reimagine their owned media opportunity. This was presented at the Media Evolved Conference in NYC this week. The four approaches are helpful in guiding the conversation. The article on Ad Age expands on each approach and gives context by providing some of the pros and cons of each.

While this is helpful for brands let's not put the cart before the horse and ensure we're leading with strategy and defining the role of 'owned media' for a brand.

Curation Nation

It seems I was on to something in my previous posts about curation and the evolving nature of owned media on the web.

The latest article in Ad Age from Bob Garfield this morning is honing in on curation as a need state. The explosion of UGC and content production and the cost of broadcast at 'zero' are key factors here.

A quote from Steven Rosenbaum, the author of a forthcoming book callled Curation Nation says it best, "The nearly infinite supply of content demands that we rely on others -- either the crowd as a whole, or tribes with which we identify, or individual experts we've come to trust, or friends or offspring we have molded, trained, subtly influenced and generally imprinted with our tastes and worldview."

It will be interesting to see how marketing departments take hold of this opportunity and reshape the face of their brands and leading with content.

Owned and Earned curated content brought to life

In my post on owned and earned content curation I spoke about using new tools to begin filtering and delivering social and professional content in a steady stream. My thoughts were mainly about consumer curation but it looks like brands are now getting into the game. Starbucks has announced the creation of the Starbucks Digital Network which is aimed at deepening the SBUX experience. Check out the details from Mashable and MediaPost. It will be interesting to see how this product evolves and who may follow suit...

Owned and Earned Media Curation (Tuning the Social Web)

There have been a number of new entrants recently into the social space redefining how people consume and curate social news. The two latest incarnations are interesting. Many of us have seen Flipboard on the iPad on the iPad. Great consumption desgin.

The newest entrants are paper.li (example http://paper.li/bthadley/industry) and DataSift which isn't out yet but you can learn more in the below clip.

These to me represent an evolution from the raw tweets and status updates to a more elegant and useful view of social news as a consumer and marekteing intelligence and communication platform for brands. It will be interesting to see these concepts evolve from alpha to beta and ultimately to widespread usage.

This is a really interesting extension to search. It is pretty simple and looks valuable for power search crowd. I do wonder how the organization makes the distinction in categorization (what is a fashion site, what is humor, etc.). I guess it doesn't matter as long as it works.

Flipboard - the Packaging of Social News for the iPad

This has to be one of the most interesting incarnations of social news feeds I've seen yet. They took a construct we're all familiar with, the magazine and turned the bits and bytes into sexy, simple and engaging UI. No more Facebook or Tweetdeck browsing for me. When you try it you'll immediately get it. It is amazing. I wonder how they might package it for smaller devices.

This should serve as a wake up to publishers and inspiration to entrepreneurs.

Creativity through Powerpoint

Yes most people bemoan the powerpoint presentation but I think of presentations as the opportunity to bring your ideas and knowledge to life. I used to be terrible at presentations and could still improve but getting the story down is 75% of it. Below are great tips about making your presenations more memorable. A couple of things I didn't see him capture here which are important.

- Understand your audience (who are they, why do they care)
- Develop the story (came through a little in CRAP)
- Pick a time when you stop developing the idea or work and focus your efforts on building the presentation.

The above should help with clarity and consistency when it is time for the show to begin.

iAd demo from Steve Jobs

I was skeptical of what apple would come up with around advertising. I do however think he examples demonstrate an interesting, valuable and intimate way to connect with people. The key is really in the execution and understanding what is meaningful and how to make the ideas within the execution elegant.

Rise of the Marketing Technologist

Thought this was a great POV on why marketing must own technology decisions. Not only do I agree I think more companies should take this tact. A mathmatical viewpoint

What Makes 100%? What does it mean to give MORE than 100%? Ever wonder about those people who say they are giving more than 100%? We have all been to those meetings where someone wants you to give over 100%. How about achieving 103%? What makes up 100% in life?

Here's a little mathematical formula that might help you answer these questions:

Is RTB Inventory volitile?

Here is a snapshot of inventory delivered across multiple RTB exchanges over a 45 day period. Notice that they all seem to follow the same directional trend however some are much more steady. Ad Meld and Pubmatic are the stable standouts while Ad Nexus wins for widest swings. Google is clearly winning for overall share of RTB.

*Since Right Media isn't a RTB service (yet)it was not included in this data set.

Measuring the ROI of Social Media

This is an entertaining video about the value that social media has provided to other organizations. I am starting to dive into Socialnomics but still grappling with how to appropriately value the interactions into quantifiable business metrics.

HP looking to compete with the iPad

While this isn't new this is the first demo I've seen of the HP Slate. Interesting to see how Adobe is overtly participating with the PC makers as they push their own "pad" products. I still have to wonder how these companies will compete with the scale of the app store. Is the Slate just a flat computer or a valuable consumption device? I guess it will be determined by the marketplace - accessibility vs. usability.
